2008 Gems Newton Cup Format

The format for the 2008 Gems Newton Cup will be structured as follows:

There will be twenty-four players in this year’s event, who will make up four teams of six players.  All players must play every round of the tournament.  If a player has advanced knowledge that he will not be able to play in one round during the tournament before the event begins, then he must withdraw from the tournament.   If a player has to cancel for any reason, it will be the captains responsibility to replace the player.  If another player is not found, then that team will automatically lose a point for every match that is not played.

Once the tournament begins, the first three rounds of play will be structured as a round robin.  Each match is worth one point to the teams total.  A match that is tied after 18 holes will result in having the point split.

Round #1 (Friday AM): 2-man best ball.

Team Gems vs. Club Z ; TNT vs. Team Newton

Round #2 (Friday PM): 2-man best ball.

Team Gems vs. Team Newton ; Club Z vs. TNT

Round #3 (Saturday AM): 2-man best ball.

Team Gems vs. TNT ; Club Z vs. Team Newton

At the conclusion of the third round, teams will be ranked from first to fourth, based on their point totals.  The fourth round (Saturday PM) will be individual match play, and will be the team that is in first place vs. the team that is in fourth place, and second place vs. third place.

In case of ties:  If there is a tie for 1st place after the 3rd round, then the two teams will have to engage in a chip-off to determine who gets the first seeding (see section on tie/playoff rules).  If two teams are tied for last place after the third round, then the team in 1st place will get to select who they want to play against for the 4th round.  The team not selected, will default to playing the team in 2nd place (this scenario occurred in 2005).

At the conclusion of the fourth round, once again teams will be ranked from first to fourth based on their point totals.  For the fifth and final round (Sunday AM), the team in first place will play the team in second place for the Gems Newton Cup.  The third  place team will play the fourth place team for the consolation.  All team points accumulated over Friday and Saturday are no longer applicable for the final round.  All matches will be individual match play.

In case of a tie for 2nd place after the 4th round, a sudden death playoff will occur on the golf course to determine who plays for the cup on the final day (see section on tie/playoff rules).

Each team captain submits the order of play for his team to the appointed tournament official. Match pairings must be submitted to match coordinator (Andy Prior) at least 30 minutes before the first scheduled AM/PM tee time.    The lists from each captain are matched resulting in the pairings.  Pairings cannot be changed unless a player is sick or injured.   All matches will be played according to handicaps.

Match Structure

Matches are either 2-man best ball, or individual match play.  2-Man Best Ball is a best-ball competition format in which the team consists of two players, which plays an opposing team of two players.  Each player on the team plays his own ball until completing the hole, then the lower of the two net scores is recorded as the team score for that hole.   2-man best ball is not a scramble, where the best shot is taken between the 2 players

For the 2 man best ball format, players should determine how many strokes they get based on the low handicap for the entire group of four.  For example if the lowest handicap in your group is 10, and you are a 17 handicap, then you would get 7 strokes.  You determine the holes that you get strokes on based on the handicap rating of the holes.  See below for an example.

Loren Brown (22 hdcp) & Rich Fontaine (12 hdcp)

Vs.

Gerry Imbery (15 hdcp) & Dave Lockhart (10 hdcp)

Because Dave is the lowest handicap, the strokes that the other players get will be based on his handicap.

Dave - 0 Strokes

Rich - 2 strokes

Gerry - 5 Strokes

Loren - 12 strokes

To determine where Loren gets his 12 strokes, choose the top 12 handicap holes.

If a player gets more than 18 strokes, then he should take a stroke on every hole, and then 2 on the #1 handicap hole (and so on), until he's out of strokes (ie.  If he got 22 strokes then he would get 2 shots on handicap holes 1 through 4.

The same applies for individual match, only in this case the amount of strokes you receive only takes your opponent (not the rest of the group you are playing with) into account.

Handicap Calculation:

In order establish every match on a level playing field, all matches will take handicaps into consideration.  Some players, who have played in several GNC’s have adequate history to determine what handicap they should be playing at.  Other with limited GNC history, do not.  It is up to each individual player to determine what their handicap should be before the event, and use that number for the entire event.  In order to maintain a high level of tournament integrity, please try and determine a fair handicap that does not understate or overstate your skill level.  Nobody likes playing against a “sand bagger”, and nobody wants to be partnered with someone who cannot play to the level that they’ve indicated.   You cannot change your handicap during the tournament, so please ensure that it’s accurate.

Prize structure:

All prizes are team prizes (with the exception of individual hole prizes like KP’s).  The top prize will be for the winning team.  The winning team receives and gets their names engraved on the Gems Newton Cup.  There will also be prizes for the team that is runner-up, and third place consolation.   The original Larry Gems trophy will be presented to the most valuable player.  This will done to give everyone a chance to get their name on the original trophy.

Playoff structure due to ties:

At the conclusion of the third round:

If there is a tie for 1st place, then the teams that are tied will engage in a chip-off to determine the winner.

If there is a tie for last place, then the team in 1st place will choose from the two teams tied for last, who they want to play in round 4.  The team that is not chosen will automatically default to playing the team in second place.

In the rare instance that there is a multi-way tie, then all teams involved will participate in a chip-off.

At the conclusion of the fourth round:

If there is a tie for 2nd place, then the teams that are tied will engage in an on-course sudden death playoff (playoff holes TBD), to determine who get to play in the final.

In the rare instance that there is a 3-way or 4-way tie, then all teams will engage in an on-course sudden death playoff.

At the conclusion of the final round:

If there is a tie in the championship match, then an on-course playoff will ensue.

If there is a tie in the consolation match, then a chip-off will ensue.

Selecting players for on-course playoffs / Chip-offs:

Due to the range of skill between players, and due to the fact that you cannot take handicaps into consideration for sudden death playoffs (potentially unfair to those giving strokes as number of holes played will be limited), players will be selected for playoffs according to the following criteria.

Each team will group two of their players as ‘A’ players, two as ‘B’ players, and two as ‘C’ players.  Players will be grouped according to their handicaps (lowest handicaps are ‘A’ players, and so forth).

At this point, a random draw will occur to determine the group of player that will be used for both teams for the playoff (A, B, or C).  The Captain of each team will then have to choose between the two players in that group to determine who will partake in the playoff.

Here is an example, say if there was a tie in the championship match in 2005 (according to 2005 handicaps):

Team Newton

Group A – Tyler McRae/David Newton; Group B – Jamie Newton/Paul Newton; Group C – Bill Ivany / Peter Newton

Club Z

Group A – Trevor Zeck/Jamie Kureluk; Group B – Travis Rowden/Colin Tough; Group C – Bob Fitzmartyn/Shawn Eltom

Say that Group C gets randomly drawn.  Therefore, Captain Paul would have to choose between Bill & Peter on who gets to play, and Captain Trevor would choose between Bob & Shawn on who plays.  If Bill is chosen to represent team Newton, and Shawn is chosen to represent Club Z, then they are the one’s who playoff/chip-off.
